Today’s colorful domestic guinea pigs are quite different from their inconspicuous wild ancestors with their grayish brown coats. Here is a small selection of the most popular breeds and varieties:
White Crested
The unique feature of this breed is the crest. Here are a chocolate animal and a cream-colored one.
Abyssinian
Tricolor Abyssinian guinea pigs are very popular. The whorls of hair (‘rosettes’) give the little rascals a comical appearance.
English Self-Crested
Although these animals have a crest, it is the same color as the coat, not white as in the White Crested. Here is one with a red crest.
Peruvian
They have long hair, two rosettes on the rump and one on the head, a part down the middle of the back, and long bangs (called the ‘frontal’). this one is black and white.
